Warm Up America and your own backyard

Have you ever considered doing any charity knitting?  There are so many organizations that could use your knitting skills.  There are organizations that accept hats for soldiers (www.warmthforwarriers.com), cancer patients (www.halosofhope.com), or even preemie babies (www.thepreemieproject.com) and so many more.  There is even an organizations that collects knitted knockers which are knitted prosthetic breasts for breast cancer patients that have undergone mastectomies, (www.knittedknockersUSA.org).

Recently, I learned about Warm Up America (www.warmupamerica.org). Warm Up America is an organization that helps distribute blankets to those in need.  There are many ways you can help them.  You can either knit entire Afghans or just send them some Afghan blocks and their volunteers will assemble them into blankets to be distributed to various groups such as women's shelters, nursing homes, homeless shelters, etc.  I had a group of ladies that was interested in learning how to knit.  I thought it would be a great opportunity to make a few blocks or even a whole blanket for Warm Up America.  Normally when I teach someone to knit, I teach them how to knit a scarf, but I thought knitting a small 7-inch by 9-inch block for an Afghan would make a nice beginner project. What other charity organizations accept knitted items? Do you have a favorite?

  1. Blankets For Canada will accept knitted, crocheted or quilted squares to make up blankets for the homeless in your area. Squares should be 8" by 8".
They also welcome whole blankets - knitted, crocheted or quilted. (Can't remember the exact size wanted.)
There is a Blankets for Canada Yahoo group as well as a FB group to check out.
